The Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) is the statutory body responsible for compensating victims of crimes of violence.

A victim’s criminal record is also be taken into account and may reduce or exclude an award.
The time limit for making a claim is two years from the date of the incident, except in the case of a child, where the two year runs from their 16th birthday. The time limit may also be relaxed in cases of childhood physical or sexual abuse.
Compensation is based on a tariff system, which delineates a monetary value to each injury. Compensation is not payable at all unless the injury attracts a minimum tariff of £1,000.
Loss of earnings because of absence from work is only recoverable after 28 weeks absence.
Where the CICA makes an award, it does not include legal costs, which must be met from the award.
